Schools and healthcare for families

School calendar, public or international schools, and access to public and private healthcare.

Checked 2026-106 steps
  1. Understand the school calendar

The Mauritian school year follows the calendar year in three terms: in 2026, mid-January to early April, late April to mid-July, then mid-August to end of October. The Ministry of Education publishes the dates each year.

  2. Choose local or international

Public and grant-aided private schools follow the national curriculum. International schools (French, British, IB programmes…) often run September to June and charge fees; contact them early as places are limited.

  3. Enrolment

Admission to Grade 1 (primary) and to entry classes in secondary takes place in the first term. For a non-citizen child in the public system, check with the Ministry to be confirmed.

  4. Public healthcare

Public healthcare (hospitals, health centres) is free for citizens and permanent residents. Holders of an ordinary residence permit generally have access, but some services may be charged to non-residents to be confirmed with the facility.

  5. Private clinics and insurance

Most expats use private clinics, which are faster but charge fees, with no official fee schedule. Local or international health insurance is strongly advised; check waiting periods, ceilings and direct billing.

  6. Emergencies

SAMU: 114. Private ambulances are also available. Keep children's vaccination records and medical files handy.
