Moving to Mauritius: residence options
Occupation Permit, retiree Residence Permit, Premium Visa: which route fits and where to apply.
Identify your profile
The Economic Development Board (EDB) handles the main permits: working (Occupation Permit), investing or starting a business, retiring, living as a remote worker (Premium Visa) or buying an eligible property. The residency.mu portal describes each route.
Professional Occupation Permit
For employment with a company in Mauritius. According to the EDB (2026 Budget), the minimum basic monthly salary is harmonised at MUR 50,000 across all sectors (effective date to be confirmed).
Investor or Self-Employed Occupation Permit
Investor: minimum initial investment of USD 100,000, then turnover of at least MUR 5 million from year 3 and MUR 8 million for renewal from year 5. Self-employed: business income of at least MUR 2 million from year 3 and MUR 3 million from year 5 (thresholds announced in 2026, effective date to be confirmed).
Retirement: Residence Permit for 50+
Open to retired non-citizens aged 50 or over who show at least USD 24,000 or a guaranteed income of USD 2,000 a month. The permit is valid for 10 years and renewable; spouse and dependent children can be included.
Premium Visa: long-stay remote work
A free visa, valid for up to one year and renewable, for people whose main business and income are outside Mauritius. It does not allow work on the local labour market; health insurance for the stay is required.
Apply online
Occupation Permit and Residence Permit applications are made online through the EDB platform (business.edbmauritius.org / NELS); you do not need to be in Mauritius to start. A non-refundable USD 50 application fee has applied to both since 1 December 2025.
Prepare supporting documents
Expect to provide your passport, birth certificate, a recent police clearance, photos and financial proof; a medical certificate and a Mauritian bank account are requested after approval in principle. Bring the originals to the final appointment.
