Health and safety for visitors

Emergency numbers, sun and sea safety, mosquitoes, pharmacies and travel insurance.

Checked 2026-107 steps
  1. Save the emergency numbers

Police: 999 or 112. SAMU (public ambulance): 114. Fire: 115. Weather and cyclone information: 171 (from a mobile).

  2. Take out travel insurance

Insurance covering medical costs and repatriation is strongly recommended, including for water sports. Private clinics charge for care and often ask for a deposit on admission.

  3. Protect yourself from mosquitoes

Dengue and chikungunya cases are regularly reported, especially after heavy rain. Use repellent, wear covering clothes and see a doctor quickly if you get a fever; avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatories if dengue is suspected.

  4. Swimming and water sports

Currents can be strong, especially near gaps in the reef: obey flags and swimming bans and check the weather before going to sea. Choose an operator holding a Tourism Ministry permit, with enough life jackets and a way to contact the coastguard.

  5. Sun and water

The tropical sun is intense all year: use sunscreen, wear a hat and drink plenty. As a precaution, drink sealed bottled water (US authorities advise against tap water).

  6. Pharmacies and medicines

Pharmacies are found in every town and tourist area. Bring your medication in its original packaging with the prescription, as some medicines are banned in Mauritius.

  7. Everyday safety

Petty crime occurs (bag snatching, villa burglaries), particularly in Port Louis, Grand Baie and Flic en Flac. Keep your passport in a safe, avoid isolated beaches and streets at night and pre-book taxis in the evening.
